DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

            St. Mary’s College, Thoothukudi, a minority Institution of higher education for women, was founded in 1948. Affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, the college offers graduate and post graduate courses. Besides the academics, the college aims at the all round training of its students especially in spiritual, social and civic values. Also the college gives importance to sports and games.

         Our teams have distinguished themselves in athletics and various games. We have been winning the MS University level Women’s Zone overall shield and the championship title 25 times. Our students participate in inter collegiate tournaments in the university, district and state, national levels. They have also represented the university, district and state. 

         The sports ground is also used for regular practice by students from neighboring schools and are by the university and district sports authorities for conducting district level and university level tournaments. The play ground is also used for university coaching camps, especially for Kabaddi, Basket Ball, Volley Ball and various athletic events.

           Our college has infrastructure facilities for a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. The large playground comprises of clay courts as well as cement courts for Basket Ball, VolleyBall, BallBadminton, Kabaddi and
Kho-Kho. We are fully equipped to conduct athletic events such as hurdles race, high jump, long jump, short put  ,Hammer ,Discus and javelin throw. The indoor stadium provides facilities for shuttle badminton, table tennis, chess, weight lifting and carom.

          An inlaid track of 200 meters is available for daily practice. Our sports centre is equipped to conduct the annual sports meet of our college, the district tournaments and even the university level sports meet. 

              Outstanding sports students are given regular enriched, breakfast, nutritious lunch, health drinks, egg, sports dress and other equipments. Indigent student’s tuition fees are paid by the college. Preference and other concessions are given to them in the allotment of seats in the Post Graduate departments also. Outstanding candidates are given valuable prizes, trophies and cups during the Annual College Day and Annual Sports Day. Besides the round the year nutritious care and physical conditioning, the college bears the travel and other expenses of the students when they are selected for training at special camps in any part of the country. The candidates with distinctions in various games and athletics are given special consideration during admissions. 

St. Mary’s College has contributed much to the sports history of
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and Tamilnadu State. The college stands tall among other colleges of Thoothukudi if one takes into account the number of tournaments we have won in the past.
