Department of Economics(SSC)
Economics is a domain of social science dealing with the understanding of manufacturing, distribution and usage of goods and services. Life globally is dominated by economic making at all levels of society that significantly determines the well-being of individuals and nations. The progress of a nation stands on the pillar of economics and it plays a crucial role in different aspects of life of people including economic, political and social aspects.
We gratefully remember our former HODs Rev. Sr. Arockia Mary (1951-1977), Mrs. Lalitha.P (1977-2000), Mrs. Baby Saroja Irene (2000-2005), Dr. L. Thilagarani (2005-2018) and Mrs. X.Esther Vimala (2018-2022) for having given a good start for this department and motivating us to strive harder and harder day by day. If it wasn’t for their efforts and hard work, we wouldn’t have emerged as a successful department today.
The Department of Economics is one of the first Departments established (B.A. Economics with History as Ancillary) in 1951. As Aided Course, the UG Department of Economics had celebrated its Platinum Jubilee (1951-2021) in the year 2021. Our department was upgraded with Post Graduation as self-supporting course in the year 2013.The Sanctioned Strength of the Department is 73 for UG and 25 for PG. Presently the Department holds the faculty strength of seven (6 doctorates).
The faculty members are actively involved in research and disseminate their findings through publications in terms of research papers in national and international journals, books and presentations in conferences, seminars, and workshops. Our department faculty members completed 3 UGC Minor Research Projects and has one ICSSR Project. 36 Books and two edited books were published by the faculties of the Department. The department has been recognised as Research Centre from September 2024 onwards. Hence, the department is now considered as PG & Research Department of Economics.
