PG and Research Department of English

The PG and Research Department of English, St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thoothukudi, aims at and works for consistently achieving academic excellence and literary distinction. Established alongside the inception of the college in 1948, the department has been instrumental in shaping the intellectual and the moral foundation of generations of students. Initially introduced as a medium of instruction, English evolved into a major discipline at the undergraduate level in 1963, postgraduate level in 1967, and M.Phil. in 1991. Eventually, the Self Supporting Stream in English was introduced in 2012. The department reached a new pinnacle in 2013 when it was elevated to the status of a Research Centre, heightening its reputation as a hub of scholarly and literary pursuits.

The department has the unique and distinct responsibility as well as the opportunity to guide and educate almost all the students passing through the College; English major students at all levels and others at different stages of their Part-II English studies. With a commitment to holistic education that fosters academic excellence and personal growth, the department integrates pedagogical practices and contemporary global trends into its curriculum. By periodically interfacing course contents to current needs and inducting employment oriented modules, the department ensures that the students are well equipped to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving world.
