About Congregation

The Congregation of Mother of Sorrows Servants of Mary (Servite Sisters) is an indigenous Women’s Congregation founded in 1854 at Tiruchirappalli, TamilNadu, numbering around 1000 sisters working in 150 communities spread in North and South India, Myanmar, Italy, Philippines and Australia.The Servites render their service in schools and colleges, social service centres, hospitals, dispensaries, schools for visually challenged and hearing impaired and Mission Stations. St.Mary's College, a Catholic Institution of Higher Education for Women, run by the Servite Sisters was founded in 1948, by the joint efforts of Msgr. Francis Tiburtius Roche SJ (Bishop of Thoothukudi), Fr. B.S. Soosainathar (Former Manager of the College) and the Servite Superiors for the Higher Education especially for the marginalized women of the coastal region.It enjoys a rich academic and spiritual heritage as a Christian minority institution for the past seven decades. The institution has made its mark in empowering women in their march towards excellence and liberation, right from its inception.
